A New Path: Leaving KFAN, joining ESPN 1500

Written by Phil Mackey on March 12th, 2010

After working at KFAN radio for more than five years, I am making a major change.

Beginning March 23, I will be teaming up daily with Patrick Reusse from noon-2 on the soon-to-be ESPN Radio 1500. I’ll also have a heavy web presence as well, covering the Twins and Vikings.

I leave KFAN with absolutely zero ill feelings. ESPN 1500 simply offered me an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I have built a ton of awesome friendships at The FAN since beginning an internship in January, 2005, and if it wasn’t for the experience and exposure I gained, I probably wouldn’t have been able to play a part in launching the Minnesota State Poker Tour, Minnesota Poker Magazine, or show my unshaven mug on SportsCenter every once in a while.

I won’t go through a list of names, because it would suck to forget somebody, but I definitely want to thank all my friends and co-workers at KFAN for everything over the last five years. It was a good run.

Now, the next challenge is to explain to Patrick Reusse what OPS is

Good luck, PMac. I’ll make sure to tune in on the 23rd.

Heh! I used to listen to Reusse on Bob’s Radio Basics and SMST back when I last lived in the TC in the early nineties.

Despite his “get off of my lawn” resistence to advaqnced metrics, he does radio well and it will be nice to have a foil for him who actually knows what he is talking about.

Should be a good show. Good luck.

  4. Brian says:

Good luck. Smart move. 1500 already is vastly superior to the kfan. Only listenable show there is common. Good luck and get the FAN listeners. The sports station my ass. Danny B is a joke

  5. MC says:

I smell a contender for Turkey of the Year!

  6. Michael Crow says:

Congrats. Hopefully, we’ll hear you often over there, I know I’m making the switch.

  7. Pat says:

Did you really not even give KFAN a chance to match/counter as P.A hinted this morning? Happy you got the gig man but that would be dumb, you and P.A had a good thing going there.

  8. Brett says:

    Congrats

Pat, I didn’t listen to the show this morning, but I was offered things at ESPN 1500 that KFAN simply never/can’t/won’t offer.

Loved working with PA. He’s one of my best friends in the business, and he’s like a big brother to me.

But I have a lot of great stuff going on in the poker world, and I felt like ESPN 1500 offered the best combination of exposure, compensation, and work environment.

No hard feelings from my end. Although, I’m sure you’ll hear me ripped apart (directly and indirectly) on KFAN.

  10. Pat says:

They intimated that they wished you would have let them try to match and that they had big long term plans for you. P.A kept talking about loyalty, seemed pissed. Anyway congrats on the job, I enjoy your takes and will continue to argue with you via twitter.

    P.S. Great video.

Don’t believe everything you hear :)

Smart move on your part, am 1500 will be the big dog in town very soon,

The greatest baseball mind – and possibly the only true Twins fan – on KFAN is leaving. Hmm. I was just getting used to hearing you regularly.

I may have to pop over to 1500 more, now. They have better weekend programing and now you. I hope they are as podcastable as KFAN. It’s too bad 1130 didn’t give you Common’s job and give him the boot. That is the best time of day for me to “take a break” from kfan. I learn absolutly no new info from 12-3 and if I wanted to hear replayed bits and unfunny jokes I can tune into my own mind.

Now I just may have to check out your new gig. Four words: Good luck with Reusse!!!! (you’re gonna need it)

  14. Johnny Walker says:

thats awesome news! congrats. bummer you’re leaving kfan though. Im such a kfan homer rube and have always considered you a great sports mind.

  15. Grant says:

Good luck. I was a bit shocked after listening to you do LT watch on KFAN. A steady gig seems like a better deal. Hope you will still unload on the Twins and Gardy as needed while working at the home of the Twins.

  16. jco says:

That PMAC stock I purchased seems to be performing nicely. Many congrats and the pairing with gruff but lovable Patrick promises to be the best inter-generational ball talk ever in this market. Onward and upward…

  17. MF says:

That is great news, now if Matt Thomas could get fired in Houston and come back up, 1500 would be hands down the best sports station in Minnesota.
